What is a registration issue?
A registration issue means Mogul has identified that one or more royalty registrations for your song are incomplete, missing, or contain incorrect data. As a result, you are not collecting all the royalties owed to that song.
Important: ASCAP registration is not enough on its own
This is one of the most common misconceptions we see. Many users who are registered with ASCAP or BMI are surprised to see registration issues in Mogul. Here's why:
ASCAP and BMI only collect performance royalties: the royalties paid when your songs are performed publicly (radio, live shows, TV, etc.). These represent roughly 33% of your total US publishing income.
The other ~66% comes from mechanical royalties: the royalties paid when your songs are streamed or downloaded on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, etc. These are collected by the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC), which is a completely separate organization from ASCAP and BMI.
If your songs are not registered at the MLC, you are not collecting mechanical royalties, even if you're fully registered with ASCAP or BMI.
Common registration issue types
Not registered at the MLC: Your song is collecting performance royalties at ASCAP/BMI but is missing its MLC mechanical registration. This is the most common issue.
Missing ISRC: The recording doesn't have an ISRC code, which is needed to match your recording to its streams.
Composition not linked to recording: Your song exists as a composition and as a recording, but they haven't been connected. This means your streams aren't being credited to your registered composition.
Wrong split percentages: Your ownership splits don't add up correctly or don't reflect your actual ownership share.
Missing co-writer or publisher information: Required fields are blank, preventing the registration from being accepted.
How to fix registration issues
Go to Registrations and click on the Fix Issues section.
Click on a song to see what specific information is missing.
Fill in the requested details, and Mogul will guide you through each step.
Submit. Mogul handles the submission to the relevant organization on your behalf.
If you're on Mogul Register or Mogul Concierge, our team monitors and resolves these issues for you.
"Mogul says complete: why don't I see it at ASCAP/BMI/the MLC yet?"
Mogul submits your registration once your information is complete and correct on our end. From there, the society processes it on their own timeline. This can take 4–8 weeks, and their portal won't reflect it until they've finished. "Complete" in Mogul means your submission is done, not that the society has finished processing it. If it's been over 8 weeks and it still isn't showing on the society's side, contact support with the song title so we can check on it directly.
How long until issues are resolved?
Once you submit a fix, processing typically takes 4–8 weeks depending on the organization. The MLC and PROs have their own review timelines that Mogul cannot speed up, but we make sure your submission is complete and accurate the first time.
