A PRO (Performing Rights Organization) is an organization that licenses the public performance of your songs and collects and distributes the resulting royalties to songwriters and publishers. When your song plays on the radio, in a restaurant, at a live venue, on TV, or on a streaming service, a PRO is tracking that use and making sure you get paid.

If you write songs, yes. Without a PRO affiliation, you are not collecting the performance royalty income your songs are generating. PRO registration is free or very low cost, and the royalties can add up significantly over time.

Most PROs have reciprocal agreements with each other, meaning if you're registered with BMI in the US, BMI will collect your performance royalties from other countries through its relationships with their PROs.

You can only be affiliated with one PRO at a time as a songwriter. Joining multiple PROs as a writer creates conflicts and can result in royalties being withheld. If you have accounts at multiple PROs, contact Mogul support, and we can help you understand which one is active and how to resolve any conflicts.

PROs collect performance royalties. Roughly 33% of your total US publishing income. They do not collect mechanical royalties (the royalties from streams and downloads). Those are collected by the MLC separately.

This is why being registered with a PRO alone is not enough, as you also need to be registered at the MLC to collect the full picture of what your music earns.
