How to Correct a Writer's Name on Your Song Registrations

Need to fix a writer name on a registration? Here's what kind of correction you need and how to get it done.

Types of writer name corrections

There are a few different scenarios for writer name corrections, and they require different steps:

  • Typo or misspelling in Mogul: Update your profile or songwriter info in Mogul before your next registration. This is a simple edit in your account settings.

  • Wrong name on an existing PRO registration: Requires a formal correction request submitted to your PRO (ASCAP, BMI, etc.).

  • Wrong name at the MLC: Requires a correction request submitted to the MLC.

  • Stage name vs. legal name: Most organizations register you under your legal name but can display a stage name/pen name as well. This requires contacting the organization directly.

How to update your writer name in Mogul

  1. Go to Settings → Profile (or the songwriter settings section in your account).

  2. Update your writer name to the correct legal name or stage name.

  3. Save. Future registrations submitted through Mogul will use the updated name.

Note: updating your name in Mogul does not automatically update existing registrations that have already been submitted. Those require separate corrections with the relevant organizations.

How to correct a writer name at ASCAP or BMI

  • ASCAP: Contact ASCAP member services at [email protected] or via your ASCAP account. Provide the song title(s), the current (incorrect) name, and the correct name.

  • BMI: Log in to your BMI account and submit a work correction, or contact BMI member support directly.

How to correct a writer name at the MLC

Log in to your MLC account at portal.themlc.com and use the work update/amendment process, or contact MLC member services at [email protected].

Writer name corrections in royalty disputes

If the name correction is connected to a royalty dispute, for example, royalties are being paid to a wrong person because of a name error, treat this as a dispute rather than a simple correction. See our article: What to Do If Another Publisher Has Already Claimed Your Royalties.

How long do corrections take?

Simple name corrections at ASCAP or BMI typically take 2–6 weeks. MLC corrections can take 4–8 weeks. Complex corrections tied to disputes may take longer. Mogul can submit and track these corrections on your behalf if you're on the Register or Concierge plan.
