What is an IPI number?
An IPI (Interested Parties Information) number is a unique 9-11 digit identifier assigned to every songwriter and publisher registered with a Performing Rights Organization (PRO). Think of it as a Social Security number for your music rights.
IPI numbers are maintained by CISAC (the international confederation of creator societies) and are used globally to identify the correct parties when royalties are being distributed.
Why does Mogul need your IPI number?
Your IPI number is how Mogul (and royalty collection organizations like the MLC and SoundExchange) confirm that your registrations are linked to you specifically. Without it:
Royalties may be distributed to the wrong person if someone has a similar name
Your songs may not be matched correctly to your existing registrations at ASCAP or BMI
Mechanical royalties at the MLC cannot be properly claimed on your behalf
When Mogul sends you a request for your IPI number, it means we've found songs that need to be registered or verified, and we need this number to do it accurately.
How to find your IPI number
Your IPI number is assigned when you register with a PRO. Here's where to find it:
ASCAP: Log in to your ASCAP account → go to your profile or member dashboard → look for "IPI Number" or "CAE/IPI"
BMI: Log in to your BMI account → go to your writer profile → your IPI number appears in your account details
SOCAN, SESAC, PRS, SACEM: Log in to your account with your PRO and look for your member profile or songwriter profile
You can also search the global IPI database at ipi.musicworldhub.com by name, though this requires confirmation with your PRO.
I don't have an IPI number yet
If you haven't registered with a PRO, you won't have an IPI number yet. Your first step is to join a PRO — see our article: What Is a PRO and Do I Need One?
Once you register and are accepted as a member, your PRO will assign you an IPI number, typically within a few weeks.
