How to Create an ASCAP Account

ASCAP is a performing rights organization in the United States. They represents the interests of songwriters, composers, and music publishers by monitoring public performances of their music, such as in venues, bars, restaurants, television, and films. ASCAP ensures that its members receive royalties for these performances, thereby protecting their creative rights and providing a source of income from their musical works. Read how to register with ASCAP so you can start claiming your royalties!

Joining ASCAP

Step 1: Create an account here

Step 2: Choose your membership type

You are prompted with choosing between three membership types. This step is crucial and often overlooked by many ASCAP users.

For songwriters Without a publishing deal:

If you DO NOT have a publishing deal with an external publishing company, you are entitled to serving as your own, independent publisher. Thus, you must sign up under the "Writer & Publisher" membership type.

Incorrectly signing up as only a writer, when you do not have a publisher or publishing admin, will only claim 50% of your performance royalties. This is because 50% of public performance royalties of a work go to writers and 50% go to publishers.

For songwriters With a publishing deal:

Sign up with the "Writer" membership type. When registering your works, you will have the option to select your publishing company as your publisher who is already registered with ASCAP.

For publishers and publishing companies:

Sign up with the "Publisher" membership type. Here, you will have the option to register works and manage licensing and copyrights for your writers.

Step 3: Fill out all necessary information

To complete the process of signing up with ASCAP, you must fill out some personal information which will be linked to your account.

When signing up as a "Writer & Publisher" you are actually creating both a writer and publisher account. This is useful when registering your works when you select your newly made publishing account as the publisher.
