PRS (Performing Right Society) is a UK performing rights organization representing songwriters, composers, and music publishers. They license music use in public settings and collect royalties for performances, broadcasts, and streams, ensuring fair compensation for music creators. In this article we'll discuss how to register your music with PRS.

Registering Works with PRS

Step 1: Login to PRS here

Step 2: Navigate to the 6 dots menu and select 'Register a Work'

Step 3: Select 'Register a new work'

Step 4: Fill in all 'Music Details' and select 'Next'

Music details include work title, alternative titles, duration, and the optional information located at the bottom. Note that if the optional information applies to you, make sure to accurately complete that section.

Step 5: Add all writers who contributed to the work by selecting 'Add writer'

After selecting 'Add writer' you must search up and add all other writers who contributed to this work. There may be multiple writers with the same name so make sure to add the correct writers to ensure fair compensation.

Step 6: Select the roles and divide shares for each writer

Note that the performing share and mechanical share must individually total to 100% among all writers.

Step 7: Hit 'Next'

Step 8: Select if you want your work to be represented by a U.S. PRO

If you select 'no' you may not receive royalties if your music is played in the U.S. After selecting 'yes' you prompted to choose between ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC which are all U.S. PRO's. By selecting a U.S. PRO and checking the agreement box, you are mirroring the information you filled out regarding your work to be registered with these PRO's.

Step 9: Select 'Yes' if you have a recording artist or ISRC code

If you have a recording artist or ISRC code you must enter it after selecting 'Yes.' This will allow PRS to easily track whenever your work is played to ensure fair compensation.

Step 10: Select 'Next'

Step 11: Select if you are making multiple submissions with the same shares

This is useful if you are registering an album that has the same writer share splits. If you select 'Yes" you will be prompted to add in different song titles and information for each song. Continue by selecting 'Next.'

Step 12: Review the summary of your work registration and hit 'Send'
