ASCAP is a performing rights organization based in the United States. They help writers and publishers collect on performance royalties which occur in public. This includes Venues, Bars, Restaurants, Television, and/or Film. Here's how to register your works so you can effectively get paid what you're owed.
If you haven't yet created an ASCAP account, read how to here!
Registering Works with ASCAP
Step 1: Login to ASCAP here
If you are signed up as a "Writer & Publisher" it does not matter if you log in with your writer or publisher account. However, for consistency and organization purposes we recommend sticking with one or the other.
Step 2: Navigate to your 'Works' section and select 'Register a Work'
Step 3: Enter in the relevant information
Fill in the title of the work, your name and split on the song, as well as any other writers, their splits, and any publisher affiliations. Remember that royalties are split 50/50 between the writers and publishers. Thus, make sure that the splits for all writers totals 50% and for all publishers totals 50%.
As mentioned before, if you are an independent publisher and registered with the "Writer & Publisher" membership type, select the writer name that corresponds with your "Writer" account and the publisher name that corresponds with your "Publisher" account.
Step 4: Scroll down and fill in the information that applies to you
Please note that these fields are not mandatory and can be skipped if it is not relevant to your work.
Step 5: Hit the 'Submit' button
Editing Your Works
It is important to remember that you can go back to your registered works to add and change some information regarding your work. For example, if you had previously not performed your work and skipped this section, you may go back to update it.
To do this, first select your 'Works' section.
Then, select your work of interest to edit.
Next, select the 'edit' button.
From there, you are directed back to your work's information page where you can update some of the information.
