Why does my song show a 50% split?
If you're a self-published songwriter (you own both the writer's share and the publisher's share of your songs), you should be collecting 100% of the royalties for your songs.
However, when a song is registered without a publisher entity attached, many collection organizations default to showing only the writer's 50% share. The publisher's 50% share either goes uncollected or is listed as unattributed.
This is extremely common for independent artists who haven't set up their own publishing entity or connected a publishing administrator.
How publishing splits work
Publishing royalties are split into two equal shares:
Writer's share (50%): paid to the songwriter(s)
Publisher's share (50%): paid to the publisher or publishing administrator
If you wrote the song yourself and you're self-published, you're entitled to both shares, but you need to be registered as both the writer and claim the publisher's share through either your own publishing entity or another publishing administrator such as Mogul's Publishing Administrator.
How to correct wrong split percentages
Go to Registrations → Fix Issues.
Find the song with incorrect splits and click on it.
In the songwriter/ownership section, update the split percentages to reflect the correct ownership. If you wrote the song entirely yourself, set the total writer share to 100% across all writers (or just yourself if you're the sole writer).
Confirm your publishing entity or select Mogul as your publishing administrator if you don't have one.
Submit the correction.
Songs with co-writers
If your song has multiple writers, splits must add up to 100% total across all writers. For example, if two people co-wrote a song equally, each writer would have a 50% writer share. Make sure all co-writer information (name, IPI number, PRO affiliation) is accurate.
How long does the correction take?
Corrections submitted through Mogul are processed by the MLC and your PRO on their own timelines, typically 4–12 weeks. Mogul monitors the status and will update your Registrations page once the correction is confirmed.
