The honest answer is: it depends on who controls your registrations. Once a song is registered, money still has to move through the collection society, get matched to your account, and clear a payment cycle before it reaches you.
There are three scenarios, and the difference between them is significant. Find yours below.
1. You're directly affiliated: as soon as 2-3 months
This is the fastest path. You're directly affiliated if you register your works yourself, inside your own accounts at SoundExchange, The MLC, ASCAP, or BMI.
Because there's no middle party approving your registration first, your claim goes straight into the society's system and starts collecting on the next distribution cycle. From registration to money in hand, expect as soon as 2-3 months.
2. You use a publishing administrator: 3-12 months
If your publishing runs through an administrator, such as Songtrust, Sentric, TuneCore Publishing, or Kosign, your registrations have to be reviewed and approved by them before they ever reach the societies.
That approval step is what sets your timeline. Expect 3 to 12 months, depending on two things:
How quickly your administrator approves and submits your registrations
How quickly they manually claim your black box (the pool of unmatched royalties held by societies that has to be actively claimed rather than paid out automatically)
If you're on the longer end of that range, the delay is almost always sitting with the administrator, not the society. It's worth following up with them directly on the status of your registrations and any black box claims.
Mogul Collections: opting into Mogul as your publishing administrator
This same category applies if you opt into Mogul Collections and make Mogul your publishing administrator. You're on the same 3 to 12 month window, because the underlying society and black box timelines don't change no matter who files on your behalf.

3. You're signed to a major publisher or label: 6 months to unresolved
If a major publisher or label controls your catalog, the timeline is the least predictable of the three. It can take 6 months, and in some cases the issue never gets resolved at all, because everything depends on how quickly your representative gets back to you.
There's no self-serve fix here. The best thing you can do is keep a written record of what you're owed, what's been registered, and every request you've sent, so you have something concrete to escalate with.
