How to Register Your Music with BMI
Updated over a week ago

BMI is a performing rights organization in the United States. They assist music writers and publishers in collecting performance royalties which occur in the following public places: Television, Bars, Venues, Film, and/or Restaurants. Continue reading to learn how to register your works to ensure you receive the royalties you're entitled to.

Registering Works with BMI

Step 1: Login to BMI here.

Step 2: Select your 'Works Registration' tab

Step 3: Select the writer or publisher account you want to add the work to (red arrow). Then select the 'Add New Work' button (orange arrow).

Step 4: Select the account you'd like to add the work to (orange arrow). Then, select whether the work is of the 'Classical' genre or 'All Other Genres' (green arrow). Select 'Next' (red arrow).

Step 5: Fill in all the basic work info, then select 'Next'.

Step 6: Select 'Yes' or 'No' for the following two questions. Answer these questions truthfully and correctly to avoid possible copyright violations. Then select 'Next.'

Step 7: Select whether or not there are publishers on this work. If you are an independent writer registering your work on your own, select 'No.' Then select 'Next.'

Step 8: Add publishers by filling out all required fields. Then select 'Next.'

The ownership percentage indicates the percentage of publishing royalties that goes to the selected publisher. This percentage must total to 100%. So, if two publishers were added, the ownership percentage for each publisher is 50%. The collection percentage and ownership percentage should be the same.

Note that this step is omitted if, in step 7, you indicated that there are no publishers for this work.

Step 9: Add writers by filling out all required fields. Then select 'Next.'

The writer share indicates the percentage of writer royalties that goes to the selected writer. This percentage must total to 100%. So, if two writers were added, the writer share for each writer is 50%. The writer share works the same as the ownership percentage in step 8.

Note that if, in step 7, you selected that there are no publishers for this work, BMI will automatically assume that you, the writer, are also the publisher and set this percentage to 200% (totaling the publisher and writer percentages). This is because every writer is entitled to being their own, independent publisher. So, if you do not have a deal with a publishing company, you are your own publisher.

Step 10: Here you can see a summary of your publisher and writers. If everything looks good select 'Next.'

Step 11: Select 'Yes' or 'No' to the following questions. Then select 'next.'

Note that if this work has not been released, distributed or performed, then there are no artists. In this case you would select 'No' for the first question. Otherwise select 'Yes.'

Step 12: Scroll through the summary page, making sure everything is correct. Agree to the terms and conditions by checking the box (blue arrow). Then select 'Submit' (red arrow).

There will be confirmations after selecting 'Submit' to make sure your work is ready to be registered.
